It would be a GREAT time to mention ghoti.

(For my other readers, "ghoti" is pronounced "fish", or alternatively, can be entirely silent, following currently existing English rules:

"gh" is "f", as in "tough"
"o" is "i", as in "women"
"ti" is "sh", as in "nation"

OR, all are silent:

"gh" as in "though"
"o" as in "people"
"t" as in "ballet"
"i" as in "business")

Shari, that's true (murder vs. car wreck example).

Added to it was the manhunt for the suspects (mentioned in my last comment), which I neglected to remember as I wrote the entry. ;-)

Even if the "car wreck" was caused by a mechanic or manufacturer deliberately ignoring safety standards, and killed more than a dozen people, it will still not draw the attention of the murder of a single person. Although corporations are "persons" under the law when it comes to freedom of speech and campaign contributions, they are not "persons" when it comes to crime. :-(

I suspect it is the terrorism, or to be less precise, the deliberateness of the marathon story. I mean, a murder would take top billing over a car wreck, right? Even if both are fatalities, one is just more of a story.

Richard: Well said.

Also, something I didn't think about when I wrote the above entry was the "ongoing-ness" of the Boston story — they were still tracking down the perps. Whereas in Texas, there was (as far as we know) nothing to track down. (And in case it IS corporate malfeasance, Americans just aren't interested in tracking that down.)

Sharon: Feel free to be wordy here. You're in good company. ;-)

We did watch a little this evening as the spectacle ended in the anti-climax of talking heads hearing in their earpieces that the subject had been apprehended. Wasn't quite a viewable event, it was live.

I was planning to take my daughter into Boston today...this guy from facebook who takes photos of the people of New York was planning to be in Boston. She was hoping to meet up with him today. However, all of Boston and surrounding areas are in lock down. It is surreal. Right now, I'm watching the uncle of the suspect being interviewed by the news media. The uncle has literally disowned their nephews. And Wil, you didn't sound like you thought it shouldn't be covered. I hope I didn't sound upset.
Right now, all citizens of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts are "Bostonians" and are grieving with the families of the victims. Several of my co-workers were running in the Marathon on Monday. They were not hurt, but were shaken up emotionally by the bombing. I got lots of calls from relatives and friends from all over the country, making sure that I was okay. Many know that many people around here like to view the marathon and cheer on the runners. I know this is wordy, but I want you to know, I feel that is why so much press has concentrated on this story. (Also, it allowed me to dump some pent-up sadness that exists for everyone around here.) As always, I appreciate the posts about your lovely little family. You are truly blessed to have a beautiful wife and daughter. I wish you continued love and happiness. Those are truly the most wonderful gifts that anyone could possibly have.
