“There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution.”

  1. Is the Democrat’s ‘tyranny of the majority’ less democratic because it reduces the GOP’s ‘tyranny of the minority’?

Probably, yes. Neither is productive in my opinion.

If a huge minority (49%, or 35%, or even 25%) are in disagreement over something fundamental to our nation (or the world, for that matter), then the majority may not have hit upon the right answer yet, or they may not yet have presented it correctly to the minority.
