White House Still Says... (w/markup)

As of Nov. 7, 2013, the White House website still says that the Affordable Care Act won’t mean the end of the plan you like, regardless of much evidence to the contrary.

  1. It’s a problem with grammar and every politician’s desire for a soundbite. The ACA has provisions that allow for companies to grandfather in all policies that were in force. But there’s nothing that says companies have to maintain the policies that were in force before the ACA. (Unless a GOP bill is passed next week) Those companies can do what they want, though. And insurance companies have changed policies around annually forever. I can’t think of a year in my thirty-two working years when I didn’t have to re-enroll even if I didn’t change anything. In essence, it wasn’t Obama’s promise to make the way he phrased it. But how do you keep it a soundbite and add all the subordinant clauses so that you don’t get called on it later?

      True.

“But how do you keep it a soundbite and add all the subordinant clauses so that you don’t get called on it later?”

I know that’s always the hard part for a politician. We (voters) want them to simplify every idea for us so we can get our “snack” of info on the news.

However, the wording on the website (screenshot above) is “you don’t have to change a thing due to the health care law“. It actually is due (in part) to the law that the plans are being canceled — because they don’t meet the law’s requirements.

(I realize it’s all a bit more complex than this. But Obama’s a smart man; I believe he could have made the soundbite more accurate and less misleading without taking away from its brevity.)
