In the News: Invasive species ride tsunami debris to US shore.
This story, and a dozen others just like it that appeared on news sites around the world, has an inaccurate and misleading headline.
Reading the story, you’ll learn that the only thing noted to have arrived from the recent Pacific tsunami is a floating Japanese dock. Nothing is known to be invading. No species have been found to be riding the dock. Nothing is known to be in danger.
Scientists are cited, saying they’re worried that more debris could bring invasive species from the other side of the world, which could cause problems with the local ecology and — indirectly — with the U.S. economy. Being worried about something isn’t the same thing as saying it’s happened.
