When I was a teenager, a self-styled “radical Christian”, waves of recorded Christian entertainment were pouring out of Tennessee — most of the recording companies — like Word Records, Sparrow, Reunion, and Myrrh — were based in Tennessee. That last one, Myrrh, was the one that launched the career of Christian comedian Mike Warnke.

From the news I’ve read this afternoon, the poorly named “Sequester” is going to happen. For the federal government overall, it reportedly means $85 billion in cuts. The “belt tightening could slow U.S. economic growth by at least 0.5 of a percentage point this year, that is not a huge drag on an economy that[...]

Keeping Secrets

In one of the photography forums I frequent, this question arose: Is it just me, or does anyone else keep secrets from their loved ones when purchasing camera equipment? … I have occasionally bought … without saying anything (because they look very similar, so I guessed she wouldnt know the difference). Occasionally I also lie[...]

Some Things I’ve Learned From The Internet

The first three points below are unrelated to the internet; it’s just that the internet has made me more aware of them. The fourth point below is almost certainly because of the internet. 1. Believing the untruth If something is true and verifiable, there are many, many people who believe it’s not true. The inverse[...]

Things you should know about me: I like charts. I’ve always like charts and comparing numbers and trends. The results don’t have to show anything; just the act of creating/reading charts is fun for me. In 2001, after a few years of intense poetry writing, I made the following chart, in a half-hearted attempt to[...]

As Fate would have it, I had spent quite a bit of time prepping a blog entry about my position on gun control before the Dec. 14, 2012, shooting at a grade school in Connecticut. At that point, curious as to what rhetoric would be vomited across the nation, I withheld my words in draft[...]

If you’ve ever lived in the south or a rural area, you might have seen this phrase on a bumper sticker: “Gun Control Means Hitting Your Target”. It’s an attempt at humor but is also very telling about two different points of view regarding private ownership of firearms in the United States. The liberal view[...]

Following are some of the facts, opinions, and viewpoints I considered when forming my current opinion on gun control. Much In Common Ironically, both sides (conservative and liberal) are driven to some degree by fear. One side fears the loss of freedom in general, the loss of protection from home invasion or attack, loss of[...]

Using Death As A Political Advantage

I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised at how quickly the news stories shifted yesterday from “Shooting at Connecticut School” to “It’s Time To Get Rid of Guns”. But I still am always surprised at how that happens in the U.S. I suppose political activists have learned that it’s much easier to press their agenda[...]

While going through old boxes recently, in an attempt to heal myself of being a packrat, I came across the “Sermon Log” that I kept from 1991 through 1995. Keeping such a log was suggested (as I recall) by my Homiletics professor Dr. Judy Brown* at Central Bible College.
