Don’t let the last few entries fool you. I’m not going to list Rebecca’s nap times every day. I only mentioned those as examples of how her sleep patterns are odd. I mentioned “Rebecca’s Law (1)” because it also seems odd to me for a kid this age. It doesn’t make any difference whether the[…]

Weather: Misty, foggy, in the mid-60s all morning. Mid-70s and windy/cloudy in the afternoon. Rebecca didn’t go to sleep till after 10 p.m. last night (due to her late nap I’m guessing), but woke up at 6:30 a.m. today and fussy (which is only normal for her if she’s tired). She surprised us by going[…]

Rebecca woke up at 5:45 a.m. and acted as if she was ready to face the day. After rocking didn’t work, and a bottle didn’t work, I finally just told her to go back to sleep, and she did (6:00 a.m.)

I’m trying a new method of blogging, to help avoid unwanted gaps in this journal. Instead of waiting a few days and then trying to remember highlights and record them in the early morning hours before Rebecca wakes up, I’m now taking advantage of WordPress’ scheduling feature. Throughout the day when I have spare minutes,[…]

* Rebecca nodded “yes” for the first time, after working at it for a bit. In the past, she’s tried to imitate my nods by shaking her head from side to side. Today she actually went up and down, but very awkwardly — and very far up and down. * Said “No” for the first[…]

• It was 86°F today, warmest day of the year so far. • Rebecca got her first three “boo-boos” (scrapes) today. First one was in the playland at Chick-fil-A; a boy pushed her down and she got rug burn on her chin. The boy’s mom made him apologize. (Rebecca didn’t cry but kept trying to[…]

Over the past several days, Rebecca has vacillated back and forth between two naps per day and one nap a day, as if unsure which works better for her. It doesn’t seem related to how long or well she sleeps at night. But her night sleeping has improved.

We got enough rain yesterday and the previous night to make up for several of the dry months last year. Hopefully, our aquifers are filling back up. Of course, it won’t help the grass much, unless it gets warm soon (and it might). The thunder woke Rebecca a few times during the night, and during[…]

Since getting her KitchenAid mixer (blog entry) and food processor (blog entry) last week, my wife has already put them to good use. (2 images after the jump)

The last few days, Rebecca did something to her sleeping pattern that we can’t figure out. She’d almost settled into a one-nap per day rhythm and was waking up only once or twice at night. Then on Sunday she began switching it around. Her nap moved earlier, which meant she needed another one really late.[…]

Cold. Finally.

I was beginning to wonder if it would get cold this winter. Aside from a couple of 32°F nights in December, it’s been mild — if not outright warm (up to 83°F a couple of times in January!). But yesterday’s low was in the upper 20s, and this morning we’re at 25 degrees so far.[…]

So, I figured out a video problem I was having, and Rebecca has taken a few more steps away from babyhood and toward childhood. (1 video after the jump)

My First DSLR Video

Below is my first video with the new Canon 60D camera. Video isn’t a feature I was looking for in a DSLR, but since it’s there I figured I would try it. Without reading the manual, I couldn’t figure out how to start a video… Even in video mode, pressing the shutter just recorded still[…]

(First impressions of Canon 60D) As is our custom, my wife and I got token gifts for each other during actual Christmas, and bought ourselves very nice things in February when we file for our income tax refund. My gift came today — a Canon EOS 60D. (3 images after the jump)

Being with Rebecca was like a dream. She was in a good mood the entire day, napped late (she wasn’t going to nap, but fell asleep as soon as I rocked her), talked more, played hard, communicated… Watched Super Bowl XLVI.

New Camera in 3 Days (and counting)

My wife said to order the camera now, instead of waiting for the IRS check to arrive. (We should be able to absorb most of the cost from our normal budget anyway.) I ordered it Wednesday afternoon; it shipped a few minutes after midnight (early Friday morning) — 33 hours after my order was placed.[…]

Dream: End of the Internet

[As with about half of my dreams, this one is easily connected to real-life events of recent days.] Surfing the internet, I visited a news website (CNN or BBC?) There were four or five news stories on the front page, the same stories that are always on the front page of news sites: some foreign[…]

January’s End

January 2012 ended — and February began — with a beautiful warm blast. There were a few more cool days, then a rainy night, but Jan. 31 was warm and clear. 75°F in the afternoon. Today’s supposed to be warmer than that. This is closer to what I expected from a Central Texas “winter” than[…]
