Rights of Prisoners

I saw today that the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the rights of prison inmates to practice the religion of their choice. This is surely a good thing, right? I know the arguments of both sides, and I know that allowing a witch to practice in prison might offend some (one of the inmates in the[…]

I (obviously) updated my profile pic, to more accurately reflect who I am & what I do. I have added a couple of baseball pictures to my website, as well as a new snake pic & one of a Black Widow spider (it’s dead — that was the only way I could get the hourglass.)[…]

Anti-Virus Troubles

Ah! I’ve been quarantined from the Internet experience for too long! And too frustrated to think correctly. When my computer’s antivirus subscription expired, I bought the newer version, as I do every year. This time, though, it required far too long to correctly install it. About eight hours, all told! I had to contact “tech[…]

[copied from a journal entry] * BUY A PAPER-SHREDDER Don’t throw away anything where your name, address, or other personal information is legible — people are trying to steal those identity thingies. * IF YOU EVER CATCH YOURSELF WITHOUT A SMILE, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT

Killer Piano

As usual, I began my holiday weekend with a horrible event. It seems that’s become policy for me. We hurried the paper to press today, so the news crew could get some extra time off for the weekend. We get Mondays off anyway, so an early Sunday paper is the best we can do for[…]

Blame No One

We (the newspaper I work for) ran a press release from the Department of Defense yesterday, in which Donald Rumsfeld (secretary of Defense) complained at length about the government’s current inability to keep information secret. He said the government was built for the “Industrial Age, instead of the Information Age,” and worried about the government’s[…]

Why do I ramble on at length so often? Mainly because, at work, my writing is forcibly brief. My job description? “Tell the people what’s going on. (1) Get it all. (2) Get it right. (3) Write it straight.” But, on top of that, newspapers are notorious for editing. And by “editing,” I don’t mean[…]

Pet Peeves For Today

First, I should apologize. I didn’t mean that the Sasakwa yearbook sponsor was holding out on me by not paying for the photo CD. I’m sure she forgot, in the rush to the end of the school year. I was just trying to get the word out. Shay-la says she’ll email the lady for me.[…]

I’m starting to create a business for myself — selling photos that I’ve taken; so far, I’ve sold about 10 CDs of pics, and four or five glossy prints. The only problem so far is that some people have neglected to pay. Juanna, if you read this, remind Taffney that she owes me $9.70 for[…]

Carl’s Jr.

I just saw the new Carl Jr.’s hamburger ad that everyone’s been raving about, the one with Paris Hilton all wet and half-clad, washing a car and eating a hamburger. Let me just say that, as stupid commercials go, this is a really stupid commercial. What person in their right mind would want to eat[…]

AFRAID of WHAT I WANT Ah, the terrors of true love! I’ve been in love before, and I’ve also had those relationships that I thought were “love,” but turned out to be stinking hell-holes of downward-spiraling jealousy and insecurity. I’d rather have the former, but fear of the latter has recently kept me alone. Then,[…]

1. Electrical devices that require a “proprietary” battery type. (Like digital cameras.) It’s infuriating to shop for a new camera, and learn that every single kind of camera requires a different kind/size/type of rechargeable battery. At first, being incredibly naive, I thought the camera-makers were just not thinking. Then I realized that they can make[…]

What a week! It was good, bad, and ugly, but it was a FULL week. The week began Sunday with a fatality wreck, and in the last seven days I’ve been to a structure fire, eight or ten Little League games, another wreck, a Sasakwa Fire Department training exercise, etc. But none of this matters.[…]

A DAY IN THE LIFE

I’m well aware what some people think of “the news media.” I know reporters are considered to be invaders of privacy, purveyors of gossip, vultures of other people’s pain, or even worse. I also know that a growing number of people don’t trust the news media anymore, for various reasons. Some people ask, “Why can’t[…]

You’ve heard people say, “Every bone in my body hurts”? Today, I may understand the phrase. *Nearly* every muscle in my body has been worn down, and most of the bones hurt too. As I do on many Mondays, a day off from the grind of the newspaper, I go to my parents’ house to[…]

Deadly Wreck

Today saw Seminole County’s second deadly wreck of 2005. It was four miles west of Seminole, on US 270, near the “Twin Bridges,” or New Lima turnoff. As usual, I was there, though I didn’t have to like it. Since our paper doesn’t come out again until Tuesday, I don’t yet have the names, etc

American Idol: Fundamentally Flawed

Can I be a juvenile for a minute? I hope Carrie Underwood wins American Idol this year. I was originally hoping for Constantine, but he was mistakenly voted out. (I’m not juvenile enough to vote on this stuff, but it’s fun to watch… Besides, my TV only gets one channel. Come to my apartment; I’ll[…]

This weekend, my nephews won 1st and 2nd place in a fishing contest at Sportsmans Lake in Seminole. The youngest one, only 4, won first place. His older brother, at 6, got the second place prize. They were pretty excited about it. There are pictures in today’s newspaper about this.

Zip Line

What a day! I spent most of the day at my parents’ house, helping my Dad build a “zip line,” which consists of a 100-foot aircraft-grade cable from one tree to another, with a pulley slung over it and handlebars. You grab the handlebars from the top of a ladder at one end and step[…]

I just read a news story on www.abcnews.go.com about a postmaster in another state who was convicted of destroying a junk mail, which is, of course, against federal regulations that “guard” our mail. I immediately fired of a “letter to the editor” on the website, saying the woman should have been honored and awarded for[…]
