I’ve mentioned a few times previously that we were working up to a long road trip. It’s the reason we took Rebecca to San Marcos in March, and why we’ve been taking her out more and more often, to stores and fast food restaurants.
So far, she’s been amazing on all these outings, but she wasn’t teething then. She’s teething now, though the pain comes and goes, usually only getting really bad for 30 minutes or so.
Our trip is coming up soon, and that’s really the only thing that worries me; that she’ll have sudden teething pains and start screaming while one of us is driving through heavy traffic in Dallas. But I think we’re ready otherwise.
My wife hasn’t slept anywhere but this house since we moved in (except possibly at her desk at work), and I’ve only spent one night away from home (the night before Rebecca was born). So we’re planning to visit my family in Seminole County, Okla., very soon. It’s about a six-hour drive under normal conditions; we’ll see how long it takes with Rebecca.
(I’m not announcing the dates of the trip here on the blog. I haven’t heard of a single instance where someone’s announced their vacation on a blog and then got robbed because they announced the date, but why take the chance?)
Six hours isn’t that bad, and you probably won’t hit traffic anywhere but Dallas. I’m sure it will be fine. Hope you have a great trip!
When my older daughter was 5 months old, we drove from Washington state (where I was living at the time) to San Francisco Bay Area—–straight through. It was surprising how well the trip went. Even coming back, she was a trooper. One suggestion, whoever isn’t driving should sit in the back seat with Rebecca. That way, if she needs to be entertained, you’re right there. And, darn, I was going to fly from Massachusetts to Texas to break and enter. Plans foiled again!! :>)
Good luck! Hopefully she sleeps some in the car.
Okay, I read about your San Marcos trip and you already do the parent in the back seat thing…….Please forgive me for an unheeded tip. (Now feeling embarrassed) Have a fun and safe trip. You will get to show off how cute your little one is!
Thanks, everyone for the comments. :-)
Sharon: :-) Don’t worry about the advice — it’s always welcome. Surprisingly, the manual that came with the rear-facing car seat suggests one parent sit in the back.
(And in my wife’s car, the baby seat only fits in the back if the front passenger seat is adjusted all the way forward; no one could sit up front anyway… :-)
