For whatever reason, it seems to rank high in the lists of links that spammers use, and has daily drawn spam comments since I published it. While Rusty and Rebecca didn’t deserve to die in the way they did, perhaps spammers do. It’s something to think about anyway.

Sharon: we were surprised too that no new lanes were opened as the existing lanes kept backing up. :-)

Janice: For us, it’s closer to 20/80 on switching lanes. Something always happens in the other lane too… That’s a great idea about the insulated bag for frozen items, IF we expect this to ever happen again. But I can’t remember the last time we spent more than 10 minutes in line, other than this time…

(And just to be clear, this was the Harker Heights Wal-Mart. We’ve never had an experience quite like that in the Killeen Wal-Mart or other grocery stores around here.)

Re switching lanes; my experience is about 50/50. About half the time I do better by switching. Agree young men are the faster checkers sometimes others are too. I’ve never heard about the contractor thing and putting things in by hand or having to be approved by a manager. Overall poor lane experiences used to be the norm at the “old Walmart” that was near my house. When the new Walmart opened and they closed the old one and many more changes came to town, my running to Walmart days were done. I still occasionally go there but not often. The clerks overall are pretty good. Re buying frozen things – that just made me irritable and grouchy because I was always concerned about it thawing. I don’t do that anymore. I have a $2 insulated bag that I put an ice pack in and take with me. I put the stuff directly from their freezer into my bag and do it at the last of the shopping. Of course I still try to find the quickest lane.

The first cashier was quite rude. I’m surprised the store didn’t open up another register when you were behind the contractor. I don’t blame you for being irked. I also don’t like Walmart for the very reasons you mentioned.

That kind of thing is SO frustrating. I would feel the same way. I used to do most of my shopping at Walmart when we rented our home before moving here. It was closest, most convenient and the only thing affordable. I hated going there, and I hated giving them my money. But I didn’t feel I had a choice. When we bought our home, we found many better options. We bought a deep freeze and some cabinets for our garage for extra food storage since we had a small pantry. I now buy meat in bulk from Zaycon, most of my produce and some other items at Aldi, and items in bulk from Costco. I rarely have to make a trip to Walmart anymore. There are only a few items that I can only find there. It sure has made life less stressful for me. We also have two about the same distance. I go to the one that is nicer. The other one doesn’t make sense how it is set up and I can’t find anything.. and it’s just plain ghetto. But if I had an experience like yours, I might have to switch!

Wow! Soon she’ll be doing dishes! It was great reading about all that’s been going on. I’m glad I didn’t miss a bunch of blog entries since I’ve been in Oklahoma all week. I did see your parents but didn’t get a chance to visit with them. Glad you all had a nice time together!
